Bruno Leitão

Bruno_LeitãoBruno Leitão is an independent curator based between Madrid and Lisbon. He has a degree in Fine Arts (ESAD-CR) and a Postgrad in Curatorial Studies (FBAUL/Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation). Currently, Leitão is a PhD candidate at the University of Castilla La-Mancha UCLM, Spain, with a thesis titled “Curating between the political and formalism,”

He as been investigating on the curatorial as a means to negotiate between opposite practices in Visual Arts, searching for synergies that can add meaning rather than finding similarities between artistic approaches or mediums. His ongoing practice is also framed by North/South problematics.

He is also an IKT Member (International Association of Curators of Contemporary Art) and Host for the Curatorial Program for Research (CPR). He was curator at Lumiar Cité, exhibition space of Maumaus, School of Visual Arts in Lisbon, where he worked with, among other artists, Allan Sekula, Harun Farocki, Florian Hecker and others.

Leitão’s recent curatorial projects includes: Principio Tautológico, Hangar, Lisbon; El Buen Caligrama, The Goma, Madrid, Spain ; You love me. You love me not, African Art from the Sindika Dokolo Collection at Galeria Municipal do Porto in Oporto, Portugal.

Leitão is a board member and Curatorial Director at Hangar – Center for Artistic Research in Lisbon.

He is a contributor for Dardo and Artishock Magazines, and is the founder and director of the curatorial web-based project Curatorial Clube, a curatorial web based project focused on the use of the document as an immediate archive.

Leitão is now temporary director of the SECONDO STILE: a Nomadic canvas-based Artist Run Exhibition Space.
