Author Website for Brainard and Delia Carey
We devote a lot of time to telling you just how you should be managing your time and, in turn, you discover that a lot of your time needs to be devoted to things that aren’t necessarily your artistic practice. For those who are new to the development of an art career, this can be something of a frustration. Even though you know how your time needs to be spent, it can be a struggle to discipline yourself enough to do it. And for what? Is there really a payoff there? After all, for every application you send in you are up against who knows how many other artists.
The answer is yes. We not only show you how to make your time work for you, we also bring you the results from artists just like you who have seen how this sort of discipline pays off. Praxis student Sasha is preparing to take a leap and attend a residency. In her own words:
“I decided to accept the residency at Chateau D’Orquevaux in France!!!!! took me a lot of soul searching to decide to spend the money (even though they give a grant) but finally i accepted. so i better have a studio sale soon. i know i will be very inspired there – it is a beautiful place. thanks so much for your support and ideas. will post photos.“
There you have it. We here at Praxis Center know how overwhelming it can feel to discover that you need to devote regular time to applications for funding and residencies, to reaching out to potential patrons and galleries – but we want you to know and believe that it will pay off. Maybe not right away (in fact almost definitely not right away) but there will be a residency that’s right for you and there are funding opportunities out there that are achievable. Your art will hang on gallery walls and patrons will sponsor and purchase your work. When you become a member of Praxis, you unlock the tools to take your career to the next level. We believe you can do it and we’ll show you how.

“You must write, and read, as if your life depended on it.” -Adrienne Rich
We live in an age of distraction. Far fewer hours are now devoted to sitting quietly with something to read or to writing anything of particular substance to those we love who are far away. Communication is increasingly relegated to online formats such as social media where brevity is absolutely required and words drown in a sea of constant noise. There is much to be said for slowing down time with a heavy novel in your lap or taking the time to pen a letter to someone who has been on your mind.
Rob Neilson is presently at work on a series of bronze castings based on images of people that are in some way important to him or to the larger context of our society but with a personal context for him. Neilson works in wax to create molds and then hands off these molds to a former student who works at a foundry and is able to cast them in bronze for him. Most of the pieces are busts, some are torsos. Subjects include Nixon, Chairman Mao, JFK, Putin and Neilson’s own great-great grandfather – a speculative piece based on what intervening generations look like. To hear more about what Rob Neilson is up to at the moment and his past work including Fruits of Labor (pictured above), listen to the complete interview.
Steven Sanchez is a poet living in Fresno, California. At the moment he is working on his next book of poems. His previous volume, Phantom Tongue, examined internalized racism and internalized homophobia and their impact on bodies of color. His new work attempts to unpack how our privilege harms others whether we mean it to or not and how we are all complicit in systemic oppression. Please take the time to listen to Steven Sanchez’s complete interview to learn more about his work about these topics as well as his personal history.
A Few Words to Keep in your Pocket:
What’s the hurry? Take a minute here and there to enjoy being alive and to reconnect with those activities that slow down the frantic pace of the world today.
Interviews are available on iTunes as podcasts, and for Android please click here. All weekly essay pieces in a shareable format are here. The full archive of interviews here.

There are those who need to plan far ahead, mapping out every nuance of their next steps for the foreseeable future. There are others for whom a fast deadline is the very best motivator. While these rapidly approaching application dates might give some artists a bad case of nerves, others will find themselves compelled to pull together at the eleventh hour and throw their hats in the ring for one of these upcoming opportunities. Which one are you?
Tuscon MOCA Curator-in-Residence program is accepting applications for their May-July residency. Eligible artists must demonstrate two years of experience outside of the academic realm. The selected curator has 24/7 access to Tuscon MOCA’s 6,000 sq. ft. great hall in which to assemble an exhibition during the residency period. Living quarters with shared kitchen as well as a one time $10,000 stipend are also awarded to the selected applicant. For full eligibility requirements and to apply, visit the website. Deadline for applications is May 1.
The Auxiliary is accepting applications for Sonic Arts, Emerging Artist Exhibition Award (EAEA). Emerging artists are encouraged to apply and those artists dwelling on the fringes, existing between cross roads of converging disciplines are encouraged to apply. A bit about The Auxiliary, in their own words:
“Based in the Tees Valley, a once prominent industrial area of northeast England, The Auxiliary (est. 2016) is a grassroots artist-led space. Working from a 1920’s town house and within sound art contexts, The Auxiliary has implemented a number of projects including an artist-in-residence programme, the Middlesbrough Art Weekender, FEED, Creative ARC and AV Format.”
There is a one time stipend available for selected artists. For complete details and to apply, visit the website. Deadline for applications is May 2.

At Praxis Center, we recognize that not everyone works the same way. While a long, drawn out process might be just right for you, the person sitting beside you might prefer to work on the fly with a deadline that leaves no air in the spaces in between. Neither is right or wrong, simply a matter of preference and personality. Join us today for insights like these as well as resources tailored to every personality.
