Andreas Backoefer is a galerist/curator, writer, and publisher based in Munich (Germany) and New York. After studying theater history, literature, and history he joined a Bavaria State Museum. From 1994-1997 he was a dramaturg at Theater Vorpommern. In 2000 he founded the publishing company epodium (humanities, art, and performance theory). The program includes about 50 printed books, e-books and an e-zine. In 2013 Andreas founded the epodium gallery. The epodium gallery presents contemporary art context-sensitive to New York or Munich/Germany. He is experienced in working with institutions (e.g. Kunstvereine, Universities) in all aspects of planning and implementing art projects. As a independent curator he co-curated for example 2006 DOCUMENT:MONUMENT:SPACE (Museum der Schritte) in Salzburg (Austria). epodium gallery was presenting shows in Vienna (Austria) and at Kunstverein Bobingen (Germany). In 2017 the gallery will present its artists in Brooklyn (NY).
2015 Andreas published a book on the relationship between art theory and museum work (Kunsttheorie und Museumspraxis zwischen 1987 und 2012. Subject – Site – Center). He is currently working on a book about the influence of cultural philanthropy on museums and artists in USA an Germany. He also has temporary teaching assignments – e.g. at Summer University of Evangelisches Studienwerk.
