Bui was named one of the \u201c100 Most Influential People in Brooklyn Culture\u201d by\u00a0<em>Brooklyn Magazine<\/em>\u00a0in 2014. In 2015, \u201cThe New York Observer\u201d called him a \u201cringmaster\u201d of the \u201cKings County art world.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0He lives with his wife the painter Nathlie Provosty\u00a0in\u00a0Greenpoint, Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to fostering the creative energy behind\u00a0<em>The Brooklyn Rail<\/em>, Bui publishes Rail Editions, a venture that features experimental poetry, fiction, artist interviews, and\u00a0art criticism. Bui contributes essays, reviews, and interviews to the\u00a0<em>Brooklyn Rail<\/em>, and creates portraits of each month\u2019s featured interviewees.\u00a0He has written articles for Matador Magazine,\u00a0Art in America, and Riot of Perfume, among others, as well as essays for exhibition catalogues and books on artists. In addition to his writing, he is the producer and host of the program\u00a0<em>Off The Rail<\/em>\u00a0at Art International Radio, where he interviews artists, art historians, writers, and other people of interest.<\/p>\n<p>Bui has curated over 50 monographic and group shows since 2000, including a first anniversary commemoration of Hurricane Sandy:\u00a0<em>Come Together: Surviving Sandy, Year 1,<\/em>\u00a0\u201ca sprawling, encompassing, inspiring exhibition of works by some 300 artists,\u201d according to Roberta Smith of the\u00a0<em>New York Times.<\/em>\u00a0The show was ranked as New York\u2019s #1 exhibition in 2013 by Jerry Saltz of\u00a0<em>New York Magazine.<\/em>\u00a0In 2013 he initiated the Rail Curatorial Projects, which aims to curate exhibitions as social experiments, including\u00a0<em>Bloodflames Revisited<\/em>\u00a0at Paul Kasmin Gallery and \u201cSpaced Out: Migration to the Interior\u201d at Red Bull Studios (2014), a two-part exhibition entitled\u00a0<em>Intimacy in Discourse: Reasonable and Unreasonable Sized Paintings<\/em>\u00a0at\u00a0Mana Contemporary and SVA Chelsea Gallery (2015), <em>Hallway Hijack<\/em> in Collaboration with the Leroy Neiman Center for Print Studies at 66 Rockwell Place (2016), and most recently a large two-part exhibition <em>Artists Need to Create on the Same Scale that Society Has the Capacity to Destroy<\/em> and <em>Friends in Solidarity<\/em> at Mana Contemporary (2017).<\/p>\n<p>Bui served as curatorial advisor at\u00a0MoMA PS1\u00a0from 2007 to 2010 where he organized monographic exhibitions of artists including Robert Bergman,\u00a0Jonas Mekas,\u00a0Joanna Pousette-Dart,\u00a0Tony Fitzpatrick, Harriet Korman, and\u00a0Jack Whitten,\u00a0and numerous group exhibitions including\u00a0<em>Irrational Profusion: Nicole Cherubini, Marc Leuthold, Joyce Robins, Peter Schlesinger<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Orpheus Selection: Nicola Lopez &amp; Lisa Sigal.<\/em>\u00a0Bui has curated other exhibitions at various galleries including recent work by Ron Gorchov at Cheim &amp; Read\u00a0as well as\u00a0<em>Exquisite Fucking Boredom,<\/em>\u00a0an exhibition of Polaroid images by artist and writer Emma Bee Bernstein at Microscope Gallery.<\/p>\n<p>A graduate of the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA, Bui continued his postgraduate studies at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture\u00a0and studied independently with\u00a0Nicolas Carone. Bui is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work includes painting, sculpture, and site-specific installation.\u00a0Since 2012 he has been working on his on-going social sculpture\/environment, which attempts to realize \u201cart as social activity\u201d and to reinforce the notion that \u201cthe process of art making is the art.\u201d\u00a0In 2006, Bui won the Award in Art from the\u00a0American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Eric Isenbeurger Annual Prize for Installation from the\u00a0National Academy\u00a0Museum. His work has been featured in 18 solo exhibitions and group exhibitions at Show Room Gallery, Sarah Bowen Gallery, Four \u00bd Project, San Art, the\u00a0Brooklyn Museum of Art, the North Dakota Museum of Art, Colby Museum. Bui has lectured at\u00a0Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture,\u00a0Columbia University,\u00a0Cooper Union,\u00a0Bard College, and taught at\u00a0Yale University,\u00a0Rhode Island School of Design,\u00a0University of Pennsylvania, and the\u00a0School of Visual Arts\u00a0where he taught graduate seminars in MFA Writing and Criticism and MFA Photography, Video, and Related Media (2012 to 2014).\u00a0He has won an Arcadia Traveling Fellowship, a Hohenberg Traveling Fellowship, and a\u00a0Pollock-Krasner Foundation\u00a0Fellowship. He was the keynote speaker of The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, and was the Visionary Honoree at Art in General\u2019s Annual Benefit (2014), a recipient of the Esther Montanez Leadership Award (2016), and the Dorothy and Leo Rabkin Award in Visual Arts Journalism (2017).
