His projects evolve through a process of deconstruction, breaking \u201cproblems\u201d down into component parts and reassembling them in forms that undermine the logic of the perception that conceptualized them as \u201cproblems\u201d in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>In unexpected ways, this sensitizes and enables the audience\/participants to experience both a measure of responsibility for a potential outcome and the freedom to find their own individual and\/or collective creative voice, be it in daily life, conventional art expression or solution to a common social or environmental challenge.<\/p>\n<p>The art is not intended to place judgment or to determine right from wrong. It is art that liberates us from the need for art. It\u2019s art that shows us how our minds are working and points us to a path away from delusion.<\/p>\n<p>Using art to see beyond form, to transform problem-oriented perception, to present the audience with fresh ways of seeing and behaving, Halpern has called \u201ccultural activism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the 1990s, learning about some of Halpern\u2019s interactive events, Allan Kaprow, progenitor of the 1960s \u201cHappening\u201d movement, said that Halpern\u2019s (see below <strong>NEW CONSUME<\/strong>) projects are like <em>\u201cFluxus with responsibility.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Projects<\/p>\n<p>In 1977, Halpern co-founded Art Corporation of America Incorporated, an artists\u2019 collaborative. Together, they launched <strong>BRIDGING<\/strong> (its 40<sup>th<\/sup> year anniversary is discussed in this on-line interview with Brainard Carey):<\/p>\n<p><em>Artists Climb New York City\u2019s Seven Largest Bridges\u00a0Embracing Manhattan as Media Sculpture<\/em> (<em>replacing terrorism on the front pages, with art, for one day.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/218115205\"><strong>BRIDGING<\/strong>, 1977<\/a>, was \u201cArt Corp\u2019s\u201d creative solution to the problem of the extraordinary access and presence terrorism had in mass media at the time.\u00a0<strong>BRIDGING\u00a0<\/strong>creatively addressed the impact violence in media has on the mind and public. The serene, celebratory spectacle atop all of New York\u2019s bridges, which became appropriated city infrastructure, captured major media attention and transformed news into art for millions of viewers worldwide. The artists, all of whom were arrested and later dismissed, technically climbed up the elegant, arched suspension cables of all the bridges to reach the summits. Traffic in and out of Manhattan was disrupted city-wide.\u00a0<strong>BRIDGING<\/strong> won Best News of the Year Award, 1977, for\u00a0ABC TV \/ Eyewitness News \/ Rose Anne\u00a0Scamardella, reporting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/218115205\"><strong><em>BRIDGING<\/em><\/strong><\/a><em> is the first social-sculpture to use mass-media as art.&#8221; &#8211;\u00a0<\/em>Joseph Beuys<\/p>\n<p>The collaborative nature and creative rigor intrinsic to the success of <strong>BRIDGING<\/strong> was not lost on Halpern. It had deep impact and resonance in his collaborative and interactive works over the following decades.<\/p>\n<p>Through an introduction to Halpern through gallerist Ronald Feldman, Joseph Beuys invited Halpern to participate with the Free University in Germany. Beuys and Halpern collaborated on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beuysfilm.com\"><strong>JOSEPH BEUYS \/TRANSFORMER<\/strong><\/a>, 1988, a television-sculpture and film portrait of Beuys produced during Beuys\u2019 Guggenheim, New York exhibition. <strong>TRANSFORMER<\/strong> is in most major contemporary art museums\u2019 permanent collections and has been translated into seven languages.<\/p>\n<p>In the late \u201880s, Halpern created <strong>NEW CONSUME<\/strong> and <strong>ART FOR THE 21<sup>ST<\/sup> CENTURY<\/strong> (featured at Tate Modern, 1993), engaging in 10 more years of public interactive art and media sculpture internationally. These works put the viewer in the position of artist\/protagonist with the motto: <em>\u201cConsumers are the producers of the future<\/em>.\u201d This maxim was exemplified by works such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ih7diD_IOrc&amp;t=3s\"><strong>SMOKESCULPTURE<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 sending cigarette smoke back to cigarette factories with 1,000 participants; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=99PCu0-Q8Bg\"><strong>FRESH AIR<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 mobile, interactive breathing stations comprised of sealed glass cubicles containing high-yield, oxygen-producing plants with closed-circuit respiration equipment, enabling over 100,000 people to exchange air between plants and each other in Europe and America; and <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/dzb06buRH8E\"><strong>BREATHSCULPTURE<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 the artist lived in an hermetically sealed glass house for 10 days with 10,000 plants, breathing once per minute in Holland. <strong>NEW CONSUME<\/strong> won a prize from the Swiss government\u2019s Department of Industry and Economy for \u201cALPS,\u201d a large-sized art cookie in the form of a mountain that engaged out-of-work people and the public in transforming the economy when buying\/eating the ALPS cookie. The motto here was <em>\u201chave a bite, change the economy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Halpern uses film as an empowering medium and tool for creative and conscious social engagement. In the mid 1990s, Halpern began exploring documentary format films, working with some of the leading spokespeople and cultural icons of our time, including the Dalai Lama, Martin Scorsese, Melissa Mathison, and Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo with films like <strong>REFUGE<\/strong> and <strong>WAKING BUDDHA<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WAKING BUDDHA LIVE<\/strong> brings Halpern back to the interactive format by engaging the audience in live, meditative experiences while watching film footage about meditation, our interconnectedness and global sustainability. <strong>WAKING BUDDHA LIVE<\/strong> provides a dynamic, contemplative opportunity to feel consciously immersed in creative and collective solution finding.<\/p>\n<p>As an educator, Halpern recently launched <strong>MINDFUL FILMMAKER<\/strong>, a three-day or 15-week course at Pratt Institute, New York. The course includes contemplation and meditation instruction along with practical hands-on filmmaking.
