The studio\u2019s practice is \u201crhizomatic\u201d\u2014 a collective of designers, architects, engineers, specialists, fabricators, and clients engaging in strategies that seamlessly integrate gesture, place, and form to create artworks of scale and social impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s4\">\u00a0Glassman first came to international attention while creating large-scale bamboo installations in urban sites devastated in the wake of the Rodney King Riots, Malibu Fires, and Northridge Quake. These works became local symbols of resiliency as well as a springboard for the permanent, large-scale public works he creates today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">Deaf and unable to speak as a child, Glassman seized art as a means of communication and self-expression. Often formidable in scale, the work is noted for how it &#8220;dazzles in slow-motion (and) creates a bracing, humanist kind of spectacle &#8230; that actually draws the viewer into the frame instead of alienating&#8221; (David Cotner, LA Weekly).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s4\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6071 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/museumofnonvisibleart.com\/interviews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/SG_headshot.jpeg?resize=300%2C296&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"296\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/museumofnonvisibleart.com\/interviews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/SG_headshot.jpeg?resize=300%2C296&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/museumofnonvisibleart.com\/interviews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/SG_headshot.jpeg?resize=768%2C758&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/museumofnonvisibleart.com\/interviews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/SG_headshot.jpeg?resize=696%2C687&amp;ssl=1 696w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/museumofnonvisibleart.com\/interviews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/SG_headshot.jpeg?resize=426%2C420&amp;ssl=1 426w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/museumofnonvisibleart.com\/interviews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/SG_headshot.jpeg?w=973&amp;ssl=1 973w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>An avid collaborator, Glassman has worked with artists and organizations ranging from Paris Opera, The Moscow Circus, Bread and Puppet Theatre, Jonathan Borofsky, Robert Irwin, Phillipe Petite, Robert Wilson, Gemini Gel, Nels Cline, Eric Owen Moss, Bjarke Ingels, Arup Engineering, Sasaki, Christo, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenberg, Marc DiSuvero, Louise Nevelson, and more .<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s4\">Glassman\u2019s public works have been included in the syllabi of classes at colleges and universities including Vassar, Syracuse, and Bard, and featured in the Lincoln Center Institute\u2019s program on \u201cAesthetic Education\u201d. Glassman\u2019s design for \u201cUrban Air\u201d \u2014 a sculpture that transforms billboards into intelligently networked, floating bamboo gardens \u2013 has been the subject of over 21,000 blogs and articles, downloaded over 150,000 times on every continent, and has received over 1,000,000 hits on Google.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s4\">\u00a0Stephen is the recipient of numerous grants and awards including the Nathan Cummings Foundation, NEA, London International Creativity Award, TEDx, LA Cultural Affairs, and a 2000 Chrysler Design Award nomination. His private studio work has been collected and exhibited nationally and internationally.
