He is known for building paintings out of other paintings- then painting into the assemblage.

Painting fluently in a wide verity of artistic languages -from abstract and expressive, to hyper realistic- it is difficult to identify the extent of his own hand within the work, underlining complexity in themes of identity, creative ownership, and artistic production to name a few. His art is also an intimate, need based form of self expression which is often relational to his experience and his imagination.

Gortner’s work has been featured at Lyons Wier Gallery (New York) Fernando Luis Alvarez Gallery (Connecticut) and Pool Gallery (Berlin) and belongs to the Collection of Eileen S. Kaminsky Family Foundation, Wooster Street Art Collective, Jimenez-Colon collection and private collections of President Jiang Zemin of China and actress Reese Witherspoon among others. He lives and operates out of New York City.

Rose Color Glasses (2015), Oil, acrylic, and assembled found paintings on board in artist frame, 42 in x 42 in

Down Dragon (2013-2015), Oil, acrylic, and assembled found paintings on board in artist frame, 96 in x 65 in

http://museumofnonvisibleart.com/interview/jamesgortner1.mp3Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Spotify | TuneIn | RSS | Click here to join mailing listBorn 1977 in Orange County, CA, painter James Gortner attended Hawaii Pacific University and received his MFA from Columbia University.
