Her multi-discipline practice spans photography, painting, sculpture, ceramics and installation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Her art investigates a fundamental aspect of human nature\u2014the desire to create a more perfect society.\u00a0This exploration has led her to research communes founded in the 1960s and to begin to develop a series of <a href=\"http:\/\/youhavebeenheresometime.blogspot.com\/2011\/06\/yhbhs-interview-with-cathy-akers.html\"><span class=\"s2\">collaged photographs<\/span><\/a> of one particularly influential, but short-lived, commune, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diggers.org\/home_free.htm\"><span class=\"s2\">Morning Star Ranch<\/span><\/a> in Northern California. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">To expand her research, she visited several communes across the country in 2012 (including <a href=\"http:\/\/blackbearranch.org\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Black Bear Ranch<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/members.pioneer.net\/~alpha\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Alpha Farm<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/thefarmcommunity.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">The Farm<\/span><\/a>) with support from a travel grant from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and developed a series of collaged photographs investigating the history and present reality of the communities that she visited.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Akers\u2019 work been exhibited in a solo shows at <a href=\"http:\/\/emmagrayhq.com\/2011\/then\/cathy-akers#1\"><span class=\"s2\">Emma Gray Headquarters<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.honorfraser.com\/?s=past&amp;eid=19\"><span class=\"s2\">Honor Fraser Gallery<\/span><\/a>, both in Culver City, CA, as well a group shows across the U.S. and in Poland, Germany, Israel, and the U.K. In 2007 she received an Artists Resource for Completion Grant (ARC) from the Durfee Foundation in support of her exhibition in April 2008 at Honor Fraser Gallery. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Her work was reviewed by Christopher Bedford in <i>Art in America<\/i> in 2009 and by Holly Myers in <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/2008\/apr\/25\/entertainment\/et-galleries25\/2\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>The Los Angeles Times<\/i><\/span><\/a> in 2008. Her watercolors were recently featured in <a href=\"http:\/\/ndrmag.org\/front-page\/2015\/05\/commune-watercolors\/\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>The New Delta Review<\/i><\/span><\/a> and a selection of her <i>Pee Performance<\/i> photographs were included in issue #13 of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cathyakers.com\/#!news\/cjg9\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>Musee Magazine<\/i><\/span><\/a>.
