He proposed a new artist-run space as public gallery and Eastside Projects was launched in 2008 as a National Portfolio Organisation by Arts Council England, with Gavin leading a team of collaborative directors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Since then the organization has grown from strength to strength and in 2010 Gavin received the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Breakthrough Fund Award for exceptional cultural entrepreneurs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0He recently worked with graphic designer James Langdon and illustrator Peter Nencini on their children\u2019s book, \u2018The Artist and The Engineer\u2019, which retells the story of Birmingham, proposing a new motto for their city. With artist Ruth Claxton he is developing \u2018Production Show 2016-18\u2019, an evolving process of relationships, commissions, exhibitions and events spanning two years which explodes Eastside Projects\u2019 transformation as an active space of research, development, prototyping, manufacturing and display.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0Gavin\u2019s major exhibition \u2018In the Midst of Things\u2019, across Bournville Village in 1999 was heralded as <\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u2018perhaps the most intriguing example of a site-specific project I\u2019ve seen in Britain\u2019 by Alex Farquharson in Frieze magazine.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> Gavin\u2019s diverse sites for commissioning art include a Naval Frigate, Portsmouth Cathedral, Greenham Common, Clumber Park, London Underground, and Dudley Zoo. He is currently commissioning agent as Eastside Projects for the \u00a32million Birmingham Big Art Project for 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0Gavin has produced art and curated exhibitions around the world including Guangzhou, Johannesburg, New York, San Francisco, Bergen, Amsterdam, Sharjah, Dublin, Berlin and Venice. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">His curated solo exhibitions include Samara Scott, Susan Philipsz, Bill Drummond, Cao Fei, Mike Nelson, William Pope.L, Dan Graham, Nathan Coley and Bas Jan Ader. Curated exhibitions include: Display Show (2015-16), Temple Bar Gallery, Dublin\/Eastside Projects\/Stroom den Haag, Netherlands, Painting Show (2011-12), This Is The Gallery And The Gallery Is Many Things, (2008), Eastside Projects; Public Structures, Guang Zhou Triennial, China (2005) and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s4\">ArtSheffield05: Spectator T (2005).<\/span><span class=\"s1\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s5\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">He is publisher and author of many books including \u2018Strategic Questions\u2019 founded in 2002 \u2013 an ongoing series of artworks as publications that answer 40 questions (written by Buckminster Fuller) that you need to know the answers to in order to solve all the worlds problems!\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0His books include Missing Houses, National Trust (with Celine Condorelli) (2012); UPCYCLE THIS TEXT, Stroom (2011); Has Man A Function In Universe?
