She studied at NCAD in Dublin and completed a BA at Goldsmiths College followed by a Postgraduate Diploma at the Royal Academy, where she graduated in 2006. She lives and works in London. Her work is concerned with notions of animacy, which she explores through photography, animation and sculpture. Many of Lang’s works examine statues and monuments as well as historic houses. She uses dolls, her own life-like body casts, to pose interventions, setting up a narrative that encompasses both sculptural concerns and performative elements.
Lang’s work invites viewers to examine their own assumptions and mechanisms of perception, in the process of uncovering artifice, sentience and intent. She has previously undertaken residencies at Memento Sculpture Park in Budapest 2010 and Art Omi in New York 2013, Zitadelle Spandau, Berlin, Eton College and the Bogliasco Foundation in 2014 and the Vermont Studio Centre in 2015. Her work is held in a number of notable collections including MoMA, the V&A, Deutsche Bank, Saatchi Gallery, Arts Council of England and the Royal Academy.

2015 saw exhibition at 22er Haus, Vienna, curated by Joseph Kossuth, a solo presentation at Start at the Saatchi Gallery and a solo show at Mem Bilbao, where Lang won the First Prize in the Festival. Works from the series Monumental Misconceptions have been on show at Musee de Beaux Arts in Calais, as part of Monument, a major European collaboration to commemorate WWI in 2014. In March 2016 new works from the Monuments series will be exhibited as part of Enthüllt, Berlin und seine Denkmäler at Museum Zitadelle Spandau in Berlin.

Marx Engels Support Group, 2015, archival print, charcoal, pastel on paper 180x150cm

Cold Comfort (Thälmann memorial) archival print, charcoal, pastel on paper 180x150cm

Detail of ‘Bent and Busted’ 2014 an installation of miniaturised deposed statues

http://museumofnonvisibleart.com/interview/lianelang.mp3Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Spotify | TuneIn | RSS | Click here to join mailing listLiane Lang grew up in Germany and the US.
