Lives and works in Brussels.

The work of Stephan Balleux dramatises the activity of painting. You see an obvious stroke of applied paint, whether you are looking at a portrait, an interior or a relatively abstract play of forms.

Balleux paints figurative images, which tackle classical motifs, saving his work from mere conceptual narcissism. He may cast a skull as a model, photographing it as a basis for a painting. Layer by layer, the painting takes shape. First comes the drawing and then the paint, until the piece looks effortless. Balleux also employs illusionist devices. He paints so dextrously that one would scarely realise that the canvas had been painted if he did not continually remind us of the fact.

In the last couple of years, Stephan Balleux has exhibited at the following: Saarlandisches Künstlerhaus, Saarbrucken (GE), Iselp, Brussels (BE), Wiels, Brussels (BE), Musée d’Ixelles (BE), La Maison Particulière, Brussels (BE), La Centrale Electrique, Brussels (BE), BroelMuseum, Kortrijk (BE), D+T Project, Brussels (BE), Larmgalleri, Copenhagen (DK), Le Fresnoy, Tourcoing (F), Fondation Culture et Dévelopement, Sofia (BG), Glaspaleis, Heerlen (NL)

Learn more on his website here.

Hold everything dear #2, 2010, 200x250cm, Oil on canvas

Thank god, 2007, 100x50cm, oil on canvas

http://museumofnonvisibleart.com/interview/stephanballeux.mp3Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Spotify | TuneIn | RSS | Click here to join mailing listStephan Balleux (b. 1974, Brussels, Belgium).
