Photo credit: \u00a9 Girl Ray, 2016<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.carriemoyer.com\">Carrie Moyer<\/a> is\u00a0an artist and writer known for her\u00a0sumptuous paintings which explore\u00a0and extend the\u00a0legacy of American Abstraction, while paying homage to many of its\u00a0groundbreaking female figures, among them Georgia O\u2019Keeffe, Helen Frankenthaler\u00a0and\u00a0Elizabeth Murray.\u00a0In equal measure abstract and\u00a0representational, Moyer\u2019s work\u00a0proposes a kaleidoscopic worldview that embraces\u00a0the sensual as much the rational.\u00a0Playful logo-like silhouettes \u2014 vessels,\u00a0towers, portals, meteorological phenomena, plant\u00a0life, animal and human forms \u2014\u00a0demarcate arched prosceniums or abstract fields of\u00a0color. These flattened archetypes\u00a0and cheeky reference points often perform as\u00a0compositional rigging around which\u00a0flow cascades of paint, glitter and light. Whether\u00a0invoking the natural or\u00a0constructed world, inventive paint handling and succulent color\u00a0seem to tempt all\u00a0of the viewer\u2019s senses, from sight to touch to taste (perhaps even\u00a0sound!). The\u00a0resulting spaces \u2014 lush and transporting \u2014 are uniquely\u00a0Moyer\u2019s own.<br class=\"\" \/>Moyer\u2019s work has been exhibited throughout the US\u00a0and Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Her paintings were\u00a0featured in the 2017 Whitney Biennial. Previous\u00a0museum shows include a traveling\u00a0survey,\u00a0Carrie\u00a0Moyer: Pirate Jenny, that originated at the Tang Museum, Saratoga\u00a0Springs,\u00a0NY; and\u00a0Interstellar, at the\u00a0Worcester Art Museum, MA (2012).\u00a0Between\u00a01991-2008, Moyer and photographer Sue Schaffner collaborated as Dyke\u00a0Action Machine!, a\u00a0public art project that humorously dissected mainstream\u00a0advertising through the insertion\u00a0of lesbian imagery. Moyer\u2019s writing\u00a0has appeared in periodicals such as Art in America,\u00a0Artforum, the Brooklyn\u00a0Rail and monographs on Louise Fishman and Nancy Grossman.<\/p>\n<p>She has received\u00a0awards from the Guggenheim and Joan Mitchell Foundations,\u00a0Anonymous Was a\u00a0Woman, and Creative Capital among others. Moyer attended Pratt\u00a0Institute (BFA),\u00a0Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, Bard College (MFA) and the\u00a0Skowhegan\u00a0School of Art. She is of the Director of MFA Program in Studio Art at Hunter\u00a0College.
